However, they are also known for causing weight gain because they contain large amounts of sugar and fats. Even so, you won’t be able to stop yourself from enjoying these delicious treats. So, what are the most famous Syrian sweets, and how are they prepared?

Taj Al-Muluk (Crown of Kings Dessert)

Taj Al-Muluk is one of the most famous Syrian desserts. It can be prepared in different ways and with different fillings, but it mainly depends on sugar syrup.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of sugar
  • 1 cup of water
  • 1 tablespoon of lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon of rose water

Filling Ingredients:

  • 1 can of cream
  • 3 cups of crushed pistachios
  • 1 cup of crushed almonds
  • 1 cup of crushed cashews

Preparation:

  1. Put the water and sugar in a medium pot on the stove and stir until the sugar dissolves.
  2. Add the lemon juice and leave the mixture for 10 minutes until it becomes sugar syrup.
  3. Let the syrup cool, then add the pistachios and the rest of the nuts. Mix well until you get a dough that is easy to shape.
  4. Grease cupcake molds with butter, then put some of the mixture into them.
  5. Make a hole in the middle and fill it with a little cream.
  6. Leave the molds in the refrigerator for two hours until they become firm.
  7. Turn the dessert onto serving plates, decorate with pistachios, and serve.

Asawer Al-Set (Lady’s Bracelets)

Asawer Al-Set is one of the most famous Syrian desserts. It is a type of baklava made using filo dough and other ingredients like syrup. The secret of making this dessert is rolling the dough in a special small shape and filling it properly.

Ingredients:

  • 1 pack of filo pastry
  • 1 cup of nuts
  • ¾ cup of ghee
  • ½ cup of spreadable chocolate

Syrup Ingredients:

  • 2 cups of sugar
  • 1½ cups of water
  • 1 teaspoon of lemon juice

Preparation:

  1. Take a sheet of filo dough, brush it with butter, and roll it around a wooden stick. Shape it into a circle like a bracelet.
  2. Remove the wooden stick and keep the circular shape, closing it from the ends.
  3. Grease a baking tray with butter, arrange the filo pieces, and bake in the oven for 15 minutes until golden.
  4. Take the tray out, fill the bracelets with pistachios, then return them to the oven and bake again for 5 minutes.
  5. Pour the syrup over the bracelets, arrange them on serving plates, and serve.

Syrian Maamoul

Syrian Maamoul is one of the most famous traditional desserts served during holidays and special occasions. It can be made with different fillings such as walnuts, pistachios, or dates, and it comes in different shapes.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups coarse semolina
  • 2 cups fine semolina
  • 1 cup ghee
  • 1 cup melted butter
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 2 tablespoons powdered milk
  • 1 tablespoon yeast
  • 4 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 tablespoon mastic
  • 3 tablespoons orange blossom water
  • 1 teaspoon mahleb
  • 1 tablespoon maamoul spices
  • ⅓ cup warm water

Date Filling Ingredients:

  • 500 grams pitted dates
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • A pinch of ground cardamom
  • A pinch of nutmeg
  • 3 tablespoons oil or butter

Pistachio Filling Ingredients:

  • 1 cup crushed pistachios
  • 3 tablespoons syrup

Preparing the Fillings:

  1. Mix all the date filling ingredients in a food processor until you get a soft dough.
  2. Shape the date mixture into small balls.
  3. Prepare the pistachio filling by mixing pistachios in a processor, then add syrup and form small balls.

Preparing the Dough:

  1. Mix fine and coarse semolina, flour, milk powder, yeast, butter or ghee, and sugar together using your fingertips (a method called rubbing the dough).
  2. Leave the dough overnight in a cool place.
  3. Add orange blossom water, rose water, mahleb, mastic, and water, and continue mixing with your fingertips.
  4. Shape the dough into small balls slightly bigger than the filling balls.
  5. Make a hole in each ball and add the filling inside.
  6. Close the dough around the filling and place it in maamoul molds.
  7. Arrange in a buttered baking tray and bake for 10 minutes.
  8. Sprinkle with powdered sugar and serve with Arabic coffee.

Halawet Al-Jibn (Cheese Sweet)

Halawet Al-Jibn is a simple dessert made from semolina and a mixture of cheeses, sweetened with syrup. It is served at different occasions as a quick and easy dessert.

Dough Ingredients:

  • 1 cup fine semolina
  • 2 cups mozzarella cheese
  • 1 tablespoon rose water
  • 1 tablespoon orange blossom water
  • 1½ cups water
  • ½ cup sugar

Filling Ingredients:

  • 1 cup chilled cream
  • ½ cup cream cheese

Decoration Ingredients:

  • 1 cup syrup
  • 1 tablespoon pistachios

Preparation:

  1. Heat water and sugar on medium heat, stirring until sugar dissolves.
  2. Add semolina and reduce heat, stirring continuously until thick.
  3. Add cheese, rose water, and orange blossom water, mix well, then remove from heat.
  4. Divide the dough into two parts and spread one part on plastic wrap into a rectangle.
  5. Trim the edges to shape it neatly.
  6. Mix cream cheese with cream and refrigerate for one hour.
  7. Put the filling along one edge and roll like a Swiss roll. Repeat with the second part.
  8. Cut into pieces, decorate with pistachios, pour syrup on top, and serve.

Awama (Luqaimat / Zalabia)

Awama is one of the most famous Syrian and Arab desserts. It is made from simple ingredients and served on many occasions. It consists of fried dough balls soaked in syrup.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon starch
  • A pinch of salt
  • 1 teaspoon yeast
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 cups syrup
  • 1 cup oil for frying

Preparation:

  1. Mix flour, water, sugar, yeast, starch, and vanilla until you get a soft dough.
  2. Leave the dough to rest for one hour until it rises.
  3. Put the dough in a piping bag or plastic bag with a hole.
  4. Heat oil over medium heat.
  5. Form small balls by squeezing the dough into the oil and cutting it.
  6. Fry for 10 minutes until golden.

Mhallabia (Milk Pudding)

Mhallabia is one of the most popular Syrian desserts served at all occasions and celebrations. It is considered a main hospitality dish because it is easy to prepare and uses simple ingredients.

  • 4 cups liquid milk
  • ½ cup starch
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 1 cup cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 4 drops liquid mastic
  • 1 tablespoon pistachios

Preparation:

  2. Dissolve starch in a little cold water or milk.
  3. Add sugar to the milk and stir until it almost boils.
